MAD LA an affordable housing proposal for AHF’s Healthy Housing Foundation is a direct and aggressive response to the homelessness crisis located in the Skid Row area of Los Angeles. The demographic served consists of homeless single adults or elderly with an emphasis on serving the LGBTQ community and those living with chronic health conditions including HIV / AIDS. The building would consist of approximately 250 units using modular construction technologies and would serve as a resilient prototype for future developments globally. Passive and active cooling strategies were integrated into the scheme through solar orientation, breezeways and outdoor gardens, as well as photovoltaics for energy efficiencies. The building addresses the street through active retail serving the neighborhood as well as the residents. The modular prototypical scheme affords spatial “plug in play” efficiencies for future maintenance as well as expansion.
